A Freezing Night at Euruka Campground
There is something about winter camping that keeps pulling us back. Most people wait for warmer weather before pitching a tent, but my girlfriend and I enjoy the challenge that comes with cold mornings, crisp mountain air and quiet campgrounds. So one Friday afternoon, we packed the car, loaded our camping gear and headed for Euruka Campground in the Blue Mountains.
The drive felt like the start of another little adventure. As we climbed into the mountains, the air became noticeably cooler. By the time we reached the campground, the sun was already beginning to sink behind the trees, painting the sky with soft shades of orange and pink.
The first thing we did was set up our gazebo. It quickly became the heart of our campsite. With the extra shelter overhead, we had somewhere comfortable to cook, relax and escape the icy breeze that swept through the open clearing. Winter camping teaches you to appreciate simple comforts, and having that covered space made a huge difference.
Once camp was organised, I unpacked our portable stove while my girlfriend prepared dinner. Before long, the smell of hot food filled the campsite. There is something special about cooking outdoors after a long drive. Every meal somehow tastes better when you are surrounded by gum trees, birds and fresh mountain air.
As darkness settled in, the campground became incredibly quiet. We wrapped our hands around warm mugs of coffee, listening to the sounds of the bush while watching the stars slowly appear above us. It was one of those peaceful moments where time seemed to slow down.
Then the cold really arrived.
Within an hour, the temperature dropped dramatically. The breeze that had felt refreshing during the afternoon now cut straight through the campsite. We laughed at how quickly we went from sitting comfortably outside to searching for every extra layer we had packed.
Thankfully, I had brought my Camp Escape Winter Down Jacket.
As soon as I zipped it up, I could feel the difference. The 60% duck down and 40% duck feather filling trapped the warmth without feeling heavy, while the quilted design helped block the cold wind. Later in the evening, I attached the hood, tightened the wrist straps and instantly felt more comfortable. Instead of hiding inside the tent, we stayed outside talking for hours and enjoying the peaceful winter night.
Watching my girlfriend smile while we shared hot drinks under the gazebo reminded me why I love camping so much. It is not about having perfect weather or the most expensive gear. It is about escaping the routine, slowing down and making memories together in places like Euruka Campground.
That night was easily one of the coldest we had experienced. We woke to frosty grass and icy air that made stepping out of the tent a real challenge. But with a hot breakfast cooking on the portable stove and the warmth of a good down jacket, even the freezing morning became part of the adventure.
Driving home, we were already talking about where we would go next.
Winter camping is not for everyone, but when you are prepared, it can be one of the most rewarding outdoor experiences Australia has to offer. Pack the right gear, bring plenty of warm food and never underestimate how quickly the temperature can fall once the sun disappears.
For us, Euruka Campground was not just another campsite. It became another story we will look back on every winter and one we will definitely repeat again.
